Three years
after "Castle of Blood", Antonio
Margheriti comes back to direct an Horror film with another
masterpiece perfectly interpreted by the "Queen of Gothic" Barbara
Steele, who gives an astonishing prove of beauty and
erotism in her acting.
With his
friend and Director of Photography Riccardo
Pallottini, Antonio Margheriti decide to use again the magic
atmosphere of black and white, and not anymore for the economical reason
of the past (the B/W film was cheaper) but to replies the photographic
beauty and mystery of "Castle of Blood".
The use of black and white was even more justified to this film located in
the 16th Century. "The Long hair of
Death" was not between the favorites of Antonio which
define it more an historical film then an Horror, but one day that I made
some critics on some scenes which I did not liked, he warmly defended it,
demonstrating that he was loving all his "Creatures" with the
same passion, without making differences between them. And also the
leading actress was Barbara Steele,
of which my father (I believe) had a crash
when they worked together, (easily to suppose for
the way he was looking at a giant photographs of her which Antonio had in
his studio) also because of that "The
Long Hair of Death" occupied a special place in his
memory.
The title
was taken from another screenplay of Ernesto
Gastaldi: "La Cripta e l'Incubo"
by Camillo Mastrocinque, form the
novel "Carmilla" by Le
Fanu. In this film there is also anoher connection with that
novel, the name of the character interpreted by Barbara
Steele: Mary Karnstein, the same family name of "Carmilla"
by Le Fanu.
