In 1961
Antonio Margheriti tried to make a film out of the catastrophic tragedy happened
in Sicily at the beginning of the century, with "The
Messina's Earthquake", a project he had together with Turi
Vasile, and for which he shoot a promo trailer of special effects,
combining the collapsing of the miniatures and shots with the actors. But
Titanus decide not to make the film, so Antonio gets his revenge whit this
Peplum "The Fault of Rome"
and he destroy with an Earthquake the eternal city of Rome.
The first
Antonio's film produced by his good friend Marco
Vicario, owner of the Atlantica
Cinematografica, who will make with this same company, other two
films with Antonio: "The Virgin of
Nuremberg" ("Horror
Castle" US Title) a
masterpiece of the Italian Gothic-Horror production and "Weird,
Wicked World" a sort of a shocking Documentary that Marco
Vicario co-direct with the pseudo of Renato Marvi.
In "The
Fault of Rome", as usual, Antonio combine several genres,
and in addition he made the first "Catastrophic" Italian movie.
In fact, this is an Historical-Adventure film, with a lot of battles and
action scenes, including the Gladiators fight in the Coliseum, but at the
end the entire city become shaken and destroyed by a tremendous
Earthquake, which will buried thousands of Romans including our hero.
Antonio Margheriti direct this adventure story with a tragic end, where
nobody wins against the fury of the elements who symbolically erase in
this way the sins of the humanity.
