"I
Giganti di Roma" (1964) Directed by Antonio
Margheriti, An
excellent historical adventure set in 52 BC during the wars between
the Gauls and Rome. A team of Roman soldiers are sent on a special operation
to eliminate a secret weapon threatening a pass in the Elysian mountains.
It turns out to be a catapult. Claudius (Richard
Harrison) leads the
mission through guerilla assaults, capture, escapes, torture, floods and
finally destroys the weapon through ingenuity and daring. The action is
nonstop and tautly staged by the director and the scrupulously detailed
script by the prolific Ernesto Gastaldi keeps the narrative historically
credible and on a suspenseful track. The Romans and Julius Caesar are heroically
and romantically portrayed by a competent cast including
Harrison who went on to more Margheriti films ("Vengeance"),
the stuntman actor Fredy Unger (who went on to appear and do stunts on
many Margheriti films such as "Planet on the
Prowl", "Snow Devils",
"Vengeance", "Cannibal
Apocalypse"), Ettori Manni, Renato Baldini and
Wandisa Guida. The score by maestro Carlo Rustichelli includes cues familiar from
Mario Bava's "Blood and Black Lace"
of the same year. Outstanding special effects include an underwater battle
and the destruction of the catapults. One of Margheriti's best
contributions to the early 60's peplum genre.
