Antonio Margheriti always like to physical participate on realizing the special effects, not only to supervising them. He was not able to remain seated watching the scene, as all director do, he should work with the SFX technicians In this photo he sprays steam in direction of the camera to create the effect  of immense heat generated by the volcano where the Alien hides.
